Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Printer, Make Sure It Has Enough Juice to Ru We installed the HL-L5200DW a few weeks ago, and we noticed that it caused our lights to blink or dim, when it fired up to print. After digging deep into the issue we found out according to the spec sheet that it draws up to 1,248 watts or roughly 10 Amps, but once it starts printing it uses 620 watts or about 6 amps. We had replaced a similar Printer which claimed to only use 579 watts or about 6 amps. Going onto Google we found a number of people that had blown out a circuit using the same HP printer we had. It turns out that though HP claims about 6 amps, they also recommend having the printer on a circuit with at least 10 AMP. Several reported that it drew in excess of 1000 watts when it started up. We solved our problem, by setting this printer up to share with the AC, that will not be used until the summer. An occasional draw of 10 amps on a 20 amp circuit, even when the AC is running and using about 5 Amps will not cause the same problem. In retrospect, we had similar light blinking and dimming when we had the HP. This is a great printer, and it has a very good sleep and deep sleep mode. However, it does draw lots of power when it starts up. Turns out all laser printers also draw a lot of power when they start-up. So bare that in mind when you buy a printer. Inkjets do not use anywhere near as much power. Brother also makes great inkjet printer. I know, because we have one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not a happy camper The first few prints were good - then started getting "page splatter". Brother sent a new toner cartridge but after a while splatter started again. Cleaned the drum with lint front free cloth and isopropyl alcohol but still no luck. Seems others have had the same problem. Have had the printer for a few years and as I don't print much I lived with the issue but now on some key document prints I'm looking for a new printer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Keeps pausing between pages during a print job. When printing several pages in a document, the printer pauses after printing 3-4 pages before continuing. I also have to unplug it to reboot it several times during a day when printing a lot of documents. Causes a huge waste of time.

I've blown off the excess several times but I the original toner cartridge in it and its bad. I have purchased 9 or 10 printers and fax machines from Brothers and they are normally good. This one is not. This is the third HL-5200 I bought in the last 12 months or so and I would not suggest any purchase this printer.

The fusion unit was damaged, technical support was great after many steps to fix problem it was agreed to get a new er a”different “ printer. I have contacted brother repeatedly and I just spent 1 hour just today. We tried everything and then I was told that there was nothing else that they could do and referred me to contact adobe. I plan to sell this machine and buy another printer from a different brand.

This unit with the two sided printing is the fastest to date as well as the most economical. I have always used Brother consumables and not had any problems; they may not be the cheapest but in my experience, they are the best.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A good choice at a reasonable price. This printer is used lightly daily. I had no issues setting it up and connecting wirelessly to the computers in our house. I haven't used all the features available yet but it does regular and two-sided printing flawlessly. I've set it to 1200dpi and everything printed is crisp and clear. It prints much quicker than the HP printer I'd used for many years. I'm very happy with this printer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unreliable transition from letter to legal Worked great for about a month. It started jamming when transitioning from one size paper to the other. My job requires me to print document packages of 100-200 pages, with both letter and legal. When I print from the road it is especially frustrating to stop at my office to pick up documents to find a paper jam. I'm happy with the quality, however, it it doesn't consistently perform it's very purpose, it's not worthy of anything more than 2 stars.

I like the wireless and USB connectivity options that are built-in. Print speed is very quick, along with duplex functionality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Some Problems After years of service my old Brother printer started jamming. While I was having it repaired, I ordered this new printer from Amazon. When I received it, I set it up and started using it but noticed that it was dropping a lot of toner on the paper. I ended up replacing the toner cartridge which seemed to help but I was still having problems so I then replaced the drum also. Since I made those two changes with "non-Brother" replacements the printer has worked great and I get nice clean prints.

Does not print different paper sizes. I have a notary business and need to print both legal and letter size for some reason it won't print the different paper sizes. I have reached to support several time without success. I want to return it.

The HL-L5200DW is a great replacement and an upgrade from its predecessor. It's working as advertised in a home environment but not getting the high volume use of a business setting except for those exceptional times during which it has met the challenge.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mostly very good Fast, reasonably quiet. The time it takes to start to print grew to 30 seconds or more. I was advised to download a new driver by Tech Support. ('m running an iMac. Wonder why they didn't reach out to me? Tech Support is well-meaning and sticks to their scripts as directed, very polite and all that, but I'm not sure they really understand. On the other hand, when I'm able to get to Tech Support in the US communications seems more open and a more satisfactory experience. Also, there are sometimes long waits to get through to a person. Mechanically, pulling out the paper tray is a problem in that it "hangs up" on the right side (looking at it). Something somewhere is snagging the tray, interfering with the removal. I'm on the phone to the Brother Helpline at this very moment, sitting on hold. I may have to take it in for repairs. It's had very gentle use, maybe 10 reams of paper over two years. Getting back to me, Tech Support says you have to pull out the paper tray until it stops, push it in a centimeter and then pull out while lifting. I asked if this was a "design feature" or a "workaround". The agent said that it is the first time she'd heard of the problem but experimented with one in her office and discovered the technique. Brother should put the Serial Number also somewhere in the front, like inside the fold-down door, so every time I call Tech Support I don't have to lift the machine up and turn it around to read the digits. I've had other high-end Brother B & W lasers (5250 DNs) that I've been happy with. It would be wonderful if they documented this "workaround" for the HL-L 5200 DW. I have recommended this model to a friend and will advise about the paper tray issue.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good printer Normally I purchase HP printers for my small home business but decided to try Brother on the recommendation from a Staples employee. I must say that I am totally blown away by this printer. I was looking for a printer to make church offering envelopes and I was able to print a box of 500 envelopes in about 30 minutes. With my HP it would take me a couple of hours. That sold me!! The only complaint I have is that the tray would only hold about 10 envelopes at one time so I had to constantly load them. That was not a problem though seeing how fast they printed once loaded. I am a satisfied customer and when I need to purchase another color laser printer, I will definitely try a Brother first.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smokin great printer! I replaced a very good HL-1850 which I have had for over 15 years. The new HL-L5200DW is really fast and the print quality is terrific. I get great speed in both regular and 2-sided mode which I use often. The unit is lighter and better designed. That isn't surprising since you would expect improvement in 15 years. But the price was so good I just couldn't pass it by. I couldn't buy a drum and cartridge for the old unit for what I paid for this printer. This thing is smoking good! Highly recommended.

I am stull using (limited?) toner cartridge that cam with it...toner is expensive, as expected... I have purchased a generic cartridge replacement... If that works OK, then the overall cost is excellent... Main problem is that it so much current that it tripped my UPS... Decided to skip the UPS for this product... now lights just flicker when printing... it occasionally pulls 2 sheets of the cheap copy paper I use... Despite these little issues, I would recommend this Brother as a good small office medium load printer...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Relatively Quiet Like the "Quiet" option. The HL5280DW (used for 7-8 years and performed well) was more noisy than is the HL-L5200 DW. Have always praised Brother printers for quality, support and reliability. Nevertheless, all things in nature obey Newton's Second Law of Thermodynamics, i.e., "Everything in nature is in a state of decay." The HL-L-5200DW is subject to the same law. I expect it to perform as well as its predecessor for as long as it did.

I love the ease of setting up the printer, making it an integral part of my home network. I verified not only the printer's ability to receive printing jobs from all computers in my home but from various iPhones and iPads as well as. All went flawlessly. I also love the printer's relatively small footprint as the space is limited. I was slightly disappointed with the noise emanating from the printer performing its job. It must be noted that the printer is capable of printing 42 pages per minute, hence it is noisier. Going through the menu, using the 'Ecology Setting' the speed of the printer can be lowered, resulting in the printer generating less noise while operating.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not just for business - fast and powerful! We replaced an older Brother duplex laser after it owed us nothing after maybe a quarter million pages! We particularly like the fold-down, approx. 50-page printing slot on the front, for printing on the backs of things we no longer want, or inserting a small quantity of special stock (e.g., cards or colored paper). We also love the automatic duplexing (would never be without that) and the speed of the unit. Plus it quickly goes into quiet mode, even when first warming up. We've had it about a month, and printed close to a ream already, with nary a jam or problem. Love it!

I had tired one before that said it had manual feed (another brand and it had the tray for it but it would not print them I could not figure out how to make it work. Saw this brother and for the price decided to try it. I am so glad that I did. It will do my manual feed jobs and set up with the wireless all I have to do is hit the print and it is coming up and printing. No long delays.

For some reason, the printer wasn't recognized in windows 10 "add printer." After rebooting and trying again 3 or 4 times, it magically appeared. Love the ability to make duplex printing the default, and printing from my tablet throughout the house is easy with the Brother I-Print app. Quick, sharp printing. Very pleased.

I have tried everything I can think of to correct the problem without success. It was difficult to set up and when I print , the lights in my office dim.

I have tried everything to get this to work with my mac unsuccessfully. There are several people that are having the same problems. Also, when it prints, it makes my lights dim in the room? It is a bit noisy - sounds like our refrigerator when the ice tray is filling - but honestly, after the first couple of times hearing it, we don't really notice it now. Very happy with the purchase.

The first one lasted over 12 years and was still going strong, but it wasn't wireless and I now need that functionality, so I purchased the new, wireless model. The printer is so very reliable, the quality is excellent, set-up is easy, and printing is super fast.

It won't print and it is connected to the network and shows as available. Online chat went through everything and could not get it to print. It just says "receiving data" and never stops. They didn't know how to put it in maintenance mode. Never used and fresh out of the box. I ran the 5470 dw for years, several of those printers, and never a malfunction. 2 lemon 5200dw so far. I bought a third and will hook up today. I hope it is not another dud.

That's the only thing I don't like about this model it works me in supplying paper in tray 1. It is my second one, I thought it used the same size cartridges as my last Hl5400dwt. The new models do use the same cartridges except the hll6200 has a super cartridge that prints 12,000 Pages, I love it!

Ostensibly an LED display on the front leads you step by step, selecting the correct options. This is not easy. Don't bring this home unless the store leads you through the installation.

Printer driver can be a little flakey at times - apps do not always connect if running for a while. Have had to restart various applications to get them to connect to the printer (not a problem with prior Brother printers

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Printer We use the printer for general text printing and the print quality is very good. The printer was super easy to setup on our WiFi network. Equally easy to install is the Brother iPrint & Scan software for iPad and Brother plugin for Android phone. We would highly recommend this printer for home or small business.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast and reliable I use this in a small business capacity and it's working very well. I'm not tech savvy so my IT guy set it up for me. It's fast, easy to use checks or letterhead without using the paper tray and its very convenient to print directly from my phone. I would definitely recommend this printer. Only suggestion I would make for an improved design is to make the control panel adjustable. The printer is tall, sits on my desk and I can't read the control panel without standing up.

When it finally broke down, I knew I would purchase another Brother replacement. The HL-L5200DW is just as reliable. I love being able to duplex. It's smaller than my old one and I opted not to get a second tray. So far the printouts have been great. No jams or smears.

I am a mobile closing attorney so its not unusual for me to get a package from the lender with very little turnaround to print everything and arrive on time for the closing. But this printer has made it happen for me so many times I'm in awe! It prints quickly and there are times where I am laying in bed, sending stuff to the printer to retrieve later. My only negative is that when I try to use the google cloud print function, it doesn't seem to register that I've sent something to print. Otherwise, this printer is a dream!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Clear, clean printing. Product provides excellent text printing with quick response time and an adequate number of pages per minute. Unlike some reviewers, I found the instillation quick and easy with both wired and wi-fi networking done and working in less than a half hour. BUT— the unit is unable to print pdf files from Adobe Acrobat XI running in Windows 8.1 in spite of several hours spent troubleshooting the issue. It will print pdf from Windows 7 so the issue is likely in the software. Others have reported the same problem so I recommend this machine only to those who do not require pdf printing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lifespan Less than 36 Months - Truly Unexpected! I purchased this printer in August 2020 and expected for the price that it would be a reliable laser printer for at least 5 years. Initially, it was a great little workhorse. However, after replacing the ink and drum kit a couple of times over the last couple of years, the machine continues to leak ink and does not print clearly. Further, trying to find a local dealer that actually repairs these machines is nearly impossible. I am VERY disappointed, given the many great marks given Brother products, in general. It makes me leery about trying another.
