Rated 5 out of 5 by from Almost a great product, needs remote support and better Wi-Fi. The 10” Android 10BDL3051T is close to great. At the time of this review I have seen very few relatively small signage displays with multi-touch and Wi-Fi. My company has recently started using this 10BDL3051T all over the world at our customer sites as a kiosk to our system. The requirement for our system is that the display be wireless, even though the display also has a wired LAN option. We have Field Engineers that set these up at our customer sites and ease of setup is important for them. The display’s ability to import and export configurations from a USB flash drive, SD card or the device’s own built in storage makes the setup quick. We started using this device with the boot to Browser option to open our custom URL, we have since created our own Android APK to boot directly to our URL by using the display’s boot to custom app feature. The two USB ports have allowed us to connect combinations of keyboards, mice, scanners and RFID readers. The HDMI port on the display is nice for displaying content on a second monitor. All of these features that I mentioned so far are what we need for our system, but there are a couple of issues with it that may ultimately cause us to stop using it. First is remote support. If our customer has a problem, we have no way of remotely accessing the unit to try and support them. This has lead us to giving customers our passwords and network passphrases in order to get in to the display to allow us to solve problems over the phone, or we send a Field Engineer to their site. I would like to see Philips provide an Android app that would allow remote support so we do not need to involve the customer. I tried to download an app from Google Play, but the apps need to be signed for the device and this limits you to installing APKs directly to the device and unless you have or develop our own remote support application, this is a problem. The second issue, which leads to most of our need for support, is the poor Wi-Fi range on the units. I have seen the units slow down and drop connection within about 75-ft (23-m for you EU guys) with line-of-site to an access point while we have other 802.11b/g/n devices connecting at double that range. I believe the problem is with the small patch antenna that Philips is using in the device. I replaced this antenna in one unit with a better antenna and placed it next to a unit with the default antenna then turned the power all the way down on my access point to find that the unit with the default antenna dropped within 5-ft (1.5-m) of the access point but the better antenna maintained connection just over 75-ft (23-m) before dropping. I would really, really like to see Philips improve the antenna and the range issue for these units.
